Sleeping bags?, 25 Aug. 2010 11:50

I am planning a 5 month (Jan - May) trekking trip to Sough America. I am hoping to do some trekking in Patagonia, the Lake District, Central Chile and possibly the north before heading into Bolivia. I am struggling to work out what rating sleeping bag will be most appropriate for the conditions. At the moment I have a -3ºC bag and can wear thermal trousers and thin down jacket as well in colder conditions. I would appreciate any thoughts about whether this is likely to be suitable for my trip.
Thanks

I think that your sleeping bag should be enough for you trips, but only depends how high you want to go up. In case you want to climb high mountains you should to use a warmer one. But if is only in lower areas whit your will be enough.

Hi,
I always use during summertime a sleeping bag up to -5°C comfort. In may it might be not enough. Going up above 4000m you need anyway something better.
best regards

Thank you for your advice, we will be in Peru by May hopefully with the intention of doing some of the longer (and higher) trekking circuits. I am beginning to think we might need something warmer but am also thinking we might well use mules for these treks in which case I wonder if it might be possible to hire or buy an additional blanket locally?
Thanks again.
